New Film Centre Announced in Memory of Uttam Kumar

IIE DIGITAL: ttam Kumar may have passed away over four decades ago, but his legacy continues to remain deeply rooted in the hearts of Bengalis. On the occasion of his 47th death anniversary on July 24, 2026, the legendary actor was remembered through a special tribute programme organised by the West Bengal government.

The commemorative event was held at Keoratala Mahashmashan, where a bust of the iconic star was unveiled in his memory. Suvendu Adhikari paid tribute to Uttam Kumar by laying a garland at the bust, while musical performances added to the emotional atmosphere of the occasion.

The event brought together several well-known personalities from politics, cinema and the cultural world. Among those present were Rupa Ganguly, Papia Adhikari, Rudranil Ghosh, actor Rituparna Sengupta and Uttam Kumar’s granddaughter Nabanita Chattopadhyay.

The occasion also saw a significant announcement regarding the centenary celebrations of the Mahanayak. With Uttam Kumar’s birth anniversary falling on September 3, a four-day programme will be organised from September 3 to 6 to mark the milestone. A special committee will also be formed at Rabindra Sadan to oversee the celebrations and coordinate the events.

As part of the plans to preserve and celebrate his contribution to Bengali cinema, a new film centre will be established in Uttam Kumar’s name. The authorities have also announced plans to modernise Uttam Mancha, which is managed by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.

The announcements added a significant dimension to this year’s death anniversary commemorations, underlining how Uttam Kumar’s contribution to Bengali cinema continues to inspire generations and remain an enduring part of Bengal’s cultural heritage.
