IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Washington, September 10: US President Donald Trump has suggested that the strategically important Strait of Hormuz should be renamed the “Trump Strait”, making the provocative remark while sharply criticising Iran and speaking about the ongoing conflict involving the two countries. Trump said that if the United States emerges victorious from the war with Iran, oil prices would fall, adding that Washington was already moving towards what he described as victory.

“Once America wins the ongoing war with Iran, the price of oil will come down, and we are on the path to that victory,” Trump said. He then suggested that the Strait of Hormuz should be renamed the “Trump Strait”. In a sarcastic reference to Iran's leadership, he added that he was sure the country's leaders would be delighted by such a proposal, before immediately questioning whether they would actually welcome the idea.

Trump continued his criticism of Iran, claiming that the country's leadership had little reason to be happy as the country itself was facing severe difficulties. His remarks came amid heightened tensions surrounding Iran and the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime routes for the transportation of oil and other energy supplies.

The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and remains critically important to global energy markets. Any prolonged disruption to shipping through the waterway could have a significant impact on international oil supplies and prices. Trump has repeatedly linked developments involving Iran to global energy prices and US energy security.

During his remarks, Trump also highlighted what he described as America's unprecedented level of oil and gas production. He claimed that the United States is currently producing more oil and gas than the combined output of Russia and Saudi Arabia and described America as the world's largest oil producer.

Trump also referred to Venezuela while discussing America's energy resources and claimed that Venezuelan oil had effectively been added to the country's overall reserves. He described the development as the largest oil deal in American history and claimed that the United States now had access to around 65 billion barrels of oil.

Trump, the oil reserves involved could potentially last for as long as 500 years. He spoke enthusiastically about the relationship involved, describing it as an excellent one and presenting the development as a major achievement for the United States' energy position.

The remarks were delivered during a speech at the Republican National Committee's midterm conference in Dallas. Trump used the occasion not only to discuss foreign policy and America's energy position but also to make a major political promise ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Trump declared that if the Republican Party manages to retain control of both the US Senate and the House of Representatives in 2026, he would provide every adult American citizen with a $5,000 dividend. The announcement adds a significant economic element to the Republican campaign as the party prepares for the crucial congressional elections.

The proposed payment would represent a substantial commitment from the federal government and is likely to become a major topic of political debate. Trump presented the proposal as a benefit that could reach millions of American adults if Republicans maintain control of both chambers of Congress.

His speech therefore combined several major themes, including the conflict with Iran, global oil prices, American energy production, relations involving Venezuela and the political battle surrounding the 2026 midterm elections. Trump's comments on the Strait of Hormuz were particularly striking because of the waterway's importance to the global economy and the sharp tensions surrounding Iran.

The suggestion to rename the Strait of Hormuz as the “Trump Strait” appeared to be partly rhetorical and was delivered in the same combative style that has characterised Trump's comments on Iran. His broader message, however, focused heavily on America's energy strength and his claim that increased domestic production could protect the country from international energy disruptions.
