IIE Digital Desk: Police and emergency services were called to the Grand Central Mall in Vienna, West Virginia, early Sunday evening after a shooting broke out that caused widespread panic. As the incident occurred on Grand Central Avenue, a bustling commercial area filled with shops and restaurants, authorities closed some of the roadways to prevent damage and opened an investigation. The scene was evacuated.

The shooting was first reported shortly after 8 p.m. local time, in the vicinity of a Chick-fil-A establishment across from the Grand Central Mall. Various witnesses posted videos and images on social media, depicting the scene being cordoned off by officers while police vehicles, ambulances, and emergency personnel arrived. The pictures quickly went viral on the internet, causing concern among locals.

In an effort to ensure the safety of first responders, Vienna Mayor Chad Emrick advised the public to avoid the area, resulting in the closure of Grand Central Avenue's northbound and southbound lanes. Authorities instructed drivers to take alternate routes while investigators investigate the crime scene. Local officials reported that two individuals were injured in the shooting and transported to Camden Clark Hospital. Although details about the victims' conditions have not been released by authorities, city officials later disclosed that two suspects were apprehended in relation to the incident. Investigators have not yet made a decision regarding the possible cause or circumstances of the shooting.

Shortly after, the scene was attended by Wood County Sheriff's deputies and emergency medical teams from Vienna Police, Parkersburg Police on the ground, as well as firefighters and other personnel. Detectives were still scouring the area late into the night, gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses and reviewing surveillance tapes. What happened next?

Social media was flooded with unconfirmed reports about the number of victims and the suspects' identities in just a few hours afterward. Yet authorities urged the public to depend on verified reports from law enforcement, warning against spreading rumours while the inquiry is still ongoing.

Authorities have stated that there is no ongoing danger to the community following recent arrests. Even so, the police presence in the area remained high as investigators attempted to determine the cause of the violence. This event has once again highlighted concerns about gun-related violence in public spaces across the country.
