IIE DIGITAL DESK : Rashmika Mandanna is once again winning hearts with her traditional fashion statement, but this time her look carried a much deeper meaning. At the launch event of her upcoming film ‘MS – A Legacy on Screen’, in which she will portray legendary Carnatic vocalist M.S. Subbulakshmi, the actress paid a graceful tribute to the musical icon by embracing her signature ‘MS Blue’ saree style.

Rashmika’s choice of outfit immediately caught attention as she appeared in a deep blue Kanchipuram silk saree, drawing inspiration from the distinctive style that became closely associated with M.S. Subbulakshmi. The legendary singer was particularly known for appearing on stage in elegant Kanchipuram silks, with blue becoming an especially recognisable part of her visual identity. The shade popularly known as ‘MS Blue’ has since become synonymous with her timeless elegance.

For the special occasion, Rashmika wore an Aikyatha Kajivaram silk saree from the Suswaram Raga Edition. The deep MS Blue shade gradually moved towards a royal purple tone, while the pallu and border featured intricate golden zari work and traditional temple motifs. The design was inspired by the classical raga Shankarabharanam, adding another layer of Indian cultural symbolism to the ensemble. Reports citing the brand’s official website place the saree’s price at around Rs 49,999.

The actress kept the styling elegant and rooted in tradition. She paired the six-yard saree with traditional gold jhumkas, bangles and a classic nath. Her hair was tied into a neat bun and decorated with fresh white flowers, giving the overall appearance a distinctly vintage Indian charm. Stylist Neerja Kona was responsible for the look.

The significance of the blue saree was not lost on fans. M.S. Subbulakshmi’s association with blue Kanchipuram silk sarees was so strong that the distinctive shade eventually came to be identified as ‘MS Blue’. Rashmika’s decision to recreate that visual identity was therefore more than a fashion choice. It served as a respectful acknowledgement of the legendary singer whose life and musical journey she is preparing to bring to the screen.

Rashmika also appeared in another striking traditional look at the event. Her second outfit featured a rich wine-coloured Kanchipuram silk saree from Sutrani, highlighted by an intricate geometric check pattern. The saree was finished with a finely woven silk-thread border and a vibrant burnt-orange pallu decorated with traditional motifs and touches of gold zari.

She paired the wine and orange saree with an off-white Mushru Benaras silk blouse. Keeping the accessories understated, Rashmika opted for delicate gold jewellery, including a simple necklace, matching earrings and bangles. The combination created a sophisticated balance between classic Indian craftsmanship and contemporary fashion.

Rashmika’s appearance was particularly significant because she is stepping into one of the most challenging roles of her career. She will play M.S. Subbulakshmi in ‘MS – A Legacy on Screen’, directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri. The film was formally launched in September on the occasion of Subbulakshmi’s 110th birth anniversary, with Kamal Haasan attending the event and giving the ceremonial clap. Anirudh Ravichander is composing the music for the project.

Speaking about the opportunity, Rashmika has expressed deep gratitude for being chosen to portray the legendary vocalist. She has also indicated that she intends to give the role her utmost dedication. The actress has begun preparing for the demanding portrayal, including training in Carnatic vocals to better understand and embody the musical legend.

The launch itself reflected the importance of Subbulakshmi’s legacy. The organisers selected ‘MS Blue’ as the dress code, while music associated with the legendary singer formed part of the celebration. Rashmika’s decision to appear in the iconic blue saree therefore fitted perfectly with the spirit of the occasion.

For fashion enthusiasts, Rashmika’s look offered a beautiful reminder of how traditional Indian clothing can become a powerful form of storytelling. The deep blue Kanchipuram silk, gold zari, traditional jewellery and white flowers recreated the visual grace associated with M.S. Subbulakshmi while allowing Rashmika to bring her own elegance to the ensemble.

As anticipation builds around ‘MS – A Legacy on Screen’, Rashmika’s ‘MS Blue’ appearance has already created considerable buzz. Her choice to honour the legendary vocalist through fashion has added an emotional dimension to the film’s launch and has given fans an early glimpse of the respect with which she appears to be approaching the role.
