IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Mumbai, September 23: Shares of Whirlpool of India surged 20% to hit the upper circuit at ₹865.35 on Wednesday, putting the stock firmly in the spotlight amid reports and market buzz that promoter entity Whirlpool Mauritius could sell its remaining stake in the Indian company. The sharp buying interest pushed the stock sharply higher during the session.
Whirlpool Mauritius currently holds 39.76% of Whirlpool of India, according to the latest NSE shareholding data for June 2026. The promoter had previously reduced its holding through market transactions, including an 11.23% stake sale in November 2025.
The latest market movement follows reports that the promoter could consider selling its entire remaining stake. However, the reported transaction remains a matter of market speculation and should not be treated as a confirmed deal unless formally disclosed through the appropriate regulatory channels.
The stake-sale issue has remained an important factor for Whirlpool of India investors over the past two years. Whirlpool Corporation had earlier announced plans to reduce its ownership in the Indian business, and its Mauritius-based subsidiary subsequently sold shares through market transactions.
The latest surge comes at a time when the company is also focusing on strengthening its business independently. Whirlpool India Managing Director Narasimhan Eswar said in August that the Indian business would operate with greater autonomy, while the company is looking to expand its premium portfolio and strengthen key categories such as refrigerators and washing machines.
For investors, the key developments to watch include any official disclosure regarding promoter shareholding, the identity of any potential strategic or financial buyer and the impact of a possible stake transaction on the company’s ownership structure.
The stock’s 20% upper-circuit move highlights the strong market reaction to the stake-sale reports, but investors should distinguish between reported market speculation and formally confirmed corporate announcements.
