Trouble Sleeping at Night? Try The Simple Natural Sleep Tricks

IIE DIGITAL: Sleep problems are becoming increasingly common, with busy schedules, stress and excessive screen time often keeping people awake long after they have gone to bed. After a tiring day, it can be frustrating to find yourself staring at the ceiling while the clock moves past midnight. Poor sleep over a long period can leave you feeling drained and irritable and may also affect your overall well-being. Fortunately, a few simple changes to your bedtime routine may help you relax and fall asleep more easily.

One of the biggest reasons people struggle to switch off at night is the constant use of smartphones and other screens. Scrolling through social media in bed keeps the brain stimulated when it should be preparing for rest. Creating a calmer pre-sleep routine and stepping away from screens can make it easier for your mind and body to slow down.

If you find yourself lying awake, try the 4-7-8 breathing technique. Take a slow breath in through your nose for four seconds, hold it for seven seconds and then breathe out gently for eight seconds. Repeat the process a few times while lying comfortably in bed. The controlled breathing may help ease tension and create a more relaxed state before sleep.

Another option is progressive muscle relaxation. Slowly work your way through different parts of your body, briefly tightening each muscle group before releasing it. This can help you become more aware of physical tension and gradually relax. If sleep still doesn't come after about 20 minutes, don't stay in bed feeling frustrated. Get up, move to a comfortable spot and read something under dim lighting. Avoid picking up your phone, as the bright screen and stimulating content may make it harder to fall asleep.

Your evening routine also matters. Try to limit caffeine later in the day, avoid heavy meals close to bedtime and keep your sleeping environment cool and comfortable. Intense exercise immediately before going to bed may also leave you feeling too alert to sleep.

However, if sleeplessness becomes a regular problem, you frequently wake up during the night or find yourself struggling to concentrate during the day, it is important to speak to a doctor. Ongoing sleep difficulties can have different causes, and professional guidance can help identify the issue and find a suitable solution.
