IIE Digital Desk: Demonstrations are causing chaos in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as deadly clashes between protesters and security forces continue to take place outside the region's legislative assembly elections. Violence has fueled political tensions, with Rawalakot residents accusing the government of excessive use of force and calling for more political/economic rights.

A group called the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) has been leading the protests, which were prohibited by Pakistani authorities earlier this year. The electoral procedure is being opposed by protesters who are challenging political interference, governance failures and the allocation of reserved assembly seats for refugees residing abroad. They have been leading campaigns since November. Demonstrators also raised objections regarding the pricing of electricity, economic adjustments, and increased local self-rule.

It has been reported that clashes occurred at least 14 times during the first phase of the elections on July 27. The number of JAAC activists who died has decreased significantly, with the organization reporting that around 30 people are dead. Additionally: The number of casualties reported since the protests began in June has been disputed by some sources, which have even put forward higher figures. Despite facing official accusations of being linked to the threat of terrorism, demonstrators asserted that they were peacefully protesting for fundamental rights. A message has been repeatedly delivered by protesters, stating that they are not terrorists.

The turmoil has also impacted the electoral process. The elections were boycotted by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), who claimed that there were widespread electoral irregularities, logistical issues, and protestations at multiple polling stations. Additionally, The ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML–N) is the leading party in phase one despite this unrest.?

Human rights and press freedom organisations have expressed growing concern over the restrictions on media coverage and reported crackdowns on protesters, drawing international attention to these issues. Critics have demanded independent investigations into the use of force and urged authorities to protect civilians' rights to peaceful assembly and expression. As tensions continue to flare, the region is facing an uncertain future as authorities attempt to restore order while protesters push for reforms.
