IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Geneva, May 19: The death toll from the Ebola virus outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has risen to 118, following the rapid spread of infections over the past few weeks. In response to the escalating situation, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an emergency health alert.

The deadly Ebola virus has once again emerged as a serious threat in West African countries. In the Democratic Republic of Congo alone, more than 300 people have been infected, and 118 have died. WHO’s warning underscores the urgent need for heightened vigilance and response to contain the outbreak.

Ebola was first identified nearly four decades ago, in 1976, and has caused multiple outbreaks since then. Historically, the virus has been largely confined to the interior regions of African countries. The primary carrier of the virus is a species of fruit bat, which serves as the natural host.

The resurgence of Ebola in Congo highlights ongoing public health challenges in the region and emphasizes the importance of rapid medical response and preventive measures to curb the spread of the virus.
