IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 30, 2026 | Dhaka : The alarming incident of sudden attack and robbery has been reported in the Wari area of Old Dhaka, where a priest of the central temple of Jagannath University, Subhash Deuri (25), was brutally assaulted by unidentified miscreants. The injured priest is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors have described his condition as serious.

Preliminary information, the incident took place around midnight on Monday near the Agrani Bank branch on 15 Narinda Road under Wari Police Station. Subhash Deuri’s roommate, Durjoy Saha, stated that the priest had stepped out of his residence to purchase medicine when a group of attackers suddenly ambushed him without warning.

The attack, the assailants reportedly struck him with sharp weapons, causing severe injuries to his head, arms, and legs. After the assault, they also snatched his mobile phone and wallet before fleeing the scene. The victim reportedly lay unconscious at the location for a long period following the attack.

Local residents later found him in a critical condition and assisted in transporting him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital early Tuesday morning at around 8 a.m. He has since been admitted and is under intensive medical supervision.

Family members of the victim further revealed that after the attackers seized his mobile phone, an unknown individual contacted his sister, Jaya, demanding a ransom of 20,000 taka. The family has already informed the police about the extortion attempt linked to the stolen phone.

Priyanto Swarnakar, convener of the Jagannath University Central Temple Committee, confirmed the incident and said that committee members visited the hospital to check on the priest’s condition. He added that, based on initial information, the priest was the victim of a robbery attack, although full details are yet to be confirmed.

Inspector Faruk Hossain of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost stated that the injured priest is receiving treatment and that the incident has been reported to Wari Police Station for further action. Legal procedures are expected to begin soon.

Wari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Matiur Rahman said that police became aware of the incident through media reports. However, no formal written complaint had been filed at the time of reporting. He added that an investigation will begin immediately once a complaint is received.
