IIE Digital Desk: China and the Philippines have caused a rise in tensions in the disputed South China Sea on Friday, with accusations of maritime conflict between the two nations near the Scarborough Shoal being the latest. The most recent conflict has heightened concerns about stability in one of the world's busiest and most contested waterways.

Chinese ships discharged water cannons at two Philippine fisherie. vessels patrolling Scarborough Shoal, Philippine Coast Guard said. "... A Chinese Coast Guard ship was said to have approached a Manila vessel, narrowly missing being seven meters away. Authorities warned that the collision could be hazardous. Officials from the Philippines criticized the actions as "dangerous" and "unprofessional," asserting that it falls within the country's EEZ, which is an international law framework.

China refuted the accusations and stood by its Coast Guard's actions. The Chinese government accused Philippine vessels of unlawfully entering waters under Chinese control, while Beijing asserted that its personnel had implemented "legalful controls" to prevent such a breach. The Chinese government reiterated their claims of sovereignty over the region and accused the Philippines of intentionally escalating tensions. This latest confrontation comes after two other incidents occurred earlier this week, one near the Second Thomas Shoal, where both sides engaged in aggressive maneuvers to quell tension between them. Recurrent incidents have emphasized the delicate South China Sea security situation, where territorial disputes have frequently resulted in diplomatic clashele and sea-based conflicts.

As Manila hosts regional conferences of the Association (ASEAN), tensions are once again elevated. The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, stated during the meetings that China's recent actions on maritime matters were escalating and that Washington is committed to its defence treaty with the Philippines. Regional leaders also talked about accelerating talks on a code of conduct to reduce the risk of war in the South China Sea.

The Scarborough Shoal has been a point of contention between China and the Philippines for many years.? The Philippines was ruled in favour of by an international arbitral tribunal in 2016, and China's extensive maritime claims were rejected. However, Beijing has refused to accept the ruling and continues to dominate much of the South China Sea.
