Jahangir Khan was planning to flee across the Nepal border to evade arrest. However, the West Bengal Police's Special Task Force reportedly received intelligence inputs about his movements through confidential sources. Acting swiftly on the information, STF personnel launched an operation and successfully tracked him down before he could execute his escape plan. The arrest marks the end of an extensive search for the man often referred to as the “uncrowned king” of Falta.
Jahangir Khan had emerged as a widely discussed figure during the Assembly election period in Falta. His fiery speeches and dramatic public appearances had drawn significant attention. In one of his most talked-about remarks, he compared himself to the character “Pushpa” from the popular film franchise and declared that “Jahangir will never bow down.” The statement quickly became a political talking point and earned him the nickname “Falta’s Pushpa.”
Jahangir was notably absent from the political battlefield on the day of the re-election held in Falta on May 21. In fact, just 48 hours before the polling date, he publicly announced his decision to withdraw from the electoral contest. At the time, he stated that he was stepping away from the election in the interest of the people of Falta and claimed that the decision had been taken keeping public welfare in mind.
Jahangir virtually disappeared from public view. Since then, law enforcement agencies had been monitoring his possible whereabouts and preparing for a coordinated operation. According to sources, he had rented accommodation in a border area and was staying there along with his wife and children. Investigators believe that he intended to settle in Nepal permanently in order to avoid legal action in India.
The operation leading to his arrest was reportedly conducted jointly by the STF and the Diamond Harbour Police. After receiving specific intelligence regarding his location, teams were divided into multiple groups and deployed strategically in the border region. Their coordinated efforts ultimately foiled Jahangir Khan’s alleged plan to cross into Nepal and enabled officers to take him into custody.
The arrest is being viewed as a significant breakthrough for the investigating agencies. With Jahangir Khan now in police custody and being brought to Kolkata, further details regarding the cases against him and the circumstances surrounding his disappearance are expected to emerge in the coming days. His detention is likely to generate considerable political and public interest, particularly in the Falta region, where he had become a prominent and controversial figure.
