IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, March 20: Police recovered a huge sum of ₹25 lakh in cash from an app-based taxi near City Centre in New Town and arrested one individual in connection with the case. The accused has been identified as Suresh Thakur, a resident of Gujarat.

The operation was carried out jointly by the Bidhannagar Detective Department and officers from Eco Park Police Station following a tip-off from confidential sources. Acting on the intelligence, police personnel began surveillance in and around the City Centre area from early Friday morning, keeping a close watch on suspicious movements.

During the operation, a suspected app cab was identified and intercepted by the officers. Upon searching the vehicle, police discovered a large amount of unaccounted cash amounting to ₹25 lakh. The recovery immediately raised suspicion, prompting officers to question the occupant.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the accused had allegedly collected the cash from the Burrabazar area and was transporting it towards New Town. However, when asked to provide valid documents or a legitimate explanation for carrying such a substantial amount of money, he failed to do so.

Suresh Thakur was taken into custody on the spot. Police have initiated a detailed investigation to trace the origin of the seized cash and to determine whether it is linked to any illegal activities, including money laundering or other financial crimes.

Officials stated that further interrogation of the accused is underway, and more arrests or revelations could follow as the probe progresses. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over the movement of large sums of unaccounted cash within the city.
