IIE Digital Desk: To celebrate National Handloom Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used social media to encourage people to share videos of their preferred handloom products on August 7, in celebration of National Handloom Day. The GRWM format, which is popular among social media creators to showcase outfits and styling routines, was specifically suggested by him.

In his plea for people to celebrate handlooms from different parts of India, Modi urged them to use social media to spread awareness about traditional Indian textiles and their techniques.

Despite the celebration of National Handloom Day on August 7 in India, the Prime Minister's call has been made. On that day, the Swadeshi Movement was launched on 7 August 1905, urging Indians to refrain from using foreign products and instead use local domestic products. The movement was instrumental in India's fight for freedom and encouraged the concept of self-reliance. National Handloom Day is a celebration of the role played by India’s weavers and artisans, contributing to the preservation of textile heritage across India. Handloom products from various regions showcase India's cultural diversity, with unique weaving techniques, designs, and fabrics that have been inherited. These items are called handloom goods.".

Modi hopes to connect with younger audiences and modern social media culture by encouraging the use of GRWM videos. Handloom promotion is no longer limited to exhibitions and official events, as the initiative encourages people "to make traditional clothing a part of everyday digital storytelling.".

The appeal also underscores the significance of supporting local artisans and sustaining the livelihoods of communities that depend on handlooms. By using social media to advertise handwoven products, traditional textiles could be promoted and indigenous fashion sought after.

Governments have shown increasing support for traditional industries like handloom and handicrafts in an effort to promote self-sufficiency and aid to local producers. Consequently, National Handloom Day serves as a platform to highlight these sectors while acknowledging the craftsmanship behind India's textile heritage.
