IIE DIGITAL: A failed entrance exam usually means disappointment, but one aspiring cybersecurity student at IIT Kanpur decided to make an unusual move. After failing to secure a place in the institute’s BTech Cybersecurity programme, the student reportedly hacked the IIT Kanpur website, leaving behind a plea for “a fair chance.”

The student later clarified on social media that the website was not damaged and that there was no intention to cause harm. The incident, however, drew the attention of the institute authorities, who decided to give the student another opportunity to appear for the examination in the second semester rather than pursue legal action.

IIT Kanpur Director Manindra Agrawal said the institute was also considering offering the student an internship. However, he stressed that hacking an educational institution’s website to gain admission or an opportunity was certainly not an acceptable method.

The student reportedly has been interested in coding since the age of 13 and sees cybersecurity as a preferred career path over conventional engineering. The student also questioned the admission process, arguing that the selection criteria were not sufficiently clear and that several seats were still vacant. According to the student, the lack of an opportunity prompted the drastic step.
