IIE DIGITAL DESK ; New Delhi | July 30 : The proceedings of the Lok Sabha were adjourned until 2:00 p.m. on Thursday after continuous protests and slogan-shouting by Opposition members disrupted the House shortly after the commencement of the Question Hour.

As soon as the session began, Opposition Members of Parliament raised various issues and staged protests inside the House. Several MPs left their seats and started raising slogans, leading to repeated disruptions during the Question Hour, one of the most important segments of the parliamentary proceedings.

Attempting to restore order, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla appealed to the protesting members to allow the House to function smoothly. He emphasized that the Question Hour is one of the most significant rights of Members of Parliament, as it serves as a crucial mechanism for ensuring the government's accountability to the legislature.

Addressing the House, the Speaker urged the Opposition not to disrupt parliamentary business during the Question Hour. He said that he had repeatedly requested members to allow the proceedings to continue, stressing that the Question Hour is an essential parliamentary process through which elected representatives seek answers from the government on matters of public importance.

"I have repeatedly requested members that the Question Hour is the right of every Member of Parliament. It is through this process that the government's accountability is ensured. My appeal is that the Question Hour should be allowed to function. Please do not disrupt the proceedings of the House," Om Birla said while urging members to maintain order.

Despite the Speaker's repeated appeals, the Opposition members continued their protest, with slogan-shouting and commotion persisting inside the House. As the disruptions showed no signs of subsiding, Om Birla eventually adjourned the proceedings until 2:00 p.m.

Before the adjournment, the Lok Sabha congratulated Indian athletes for their outstanding performances at the 23rd Commonwealth Games 2026.

Speaker Om Birla extended congratulations to Murali Sreeshankar, who won the silver medal in the men's long jump after registering a leap of 8.09 metres. The House also congratulated Dilip Mahadu Gavit for winning the gold medal in the men's 100m T-47 event and Mohammed Basil Morsingankath for securing the silver medal in the same category.

The brief recognition of India's sporting achievements was followed by renewed protests from Opposition members, ultimately forcing the Chair to suspend the proceedings. Parliamentary business is expected to resume later in the day, with the government and Opposition likely to continue discussions on the issues that triggered the disruption.
