Mumbai: One of the tunnels on Mumbai's Coastal Road caught fire, leaving traffic slow as an emergency response was called due to a moving car sparking ferocious clashes. Moments of panic ensued as commuter's rushed to help, but authorities were swift to respond and no injuries were reported.

According to officials, smoke was seen billowing from the engine area as it travelled through the tunnel. Soon after, the smoke erupted into a commotion and the driver had to pull over. Occupants quickly got out of the vehicle and moved on to safety before the flames spread.

The occurrence happened during a busy traffic hour, leading to heavy traffic in the tunnel and on adjacent roads. Immediately, authorities issued alerts and took traffic management measures to prevent further problems as emergency responders arrived at the scene.

The response of fire brigade personnel, traffic police officers, and Coastal Road operations staff was prompt. Shortly after arrival, firefighters began firefighting work which contained the fire before it spread to surrounding vehicles or damaged critical tunnel infrastructure.Officials said that emergency safety equipment had worked well in this incident on site. While surveillance and traffic control teams facilitated the safe passage of vehicles, smoke was removed from the enclosed area using ventilation systems. These systems prevented a more significant emergency and safeguarded commuters.

While it is not yet clear what caused the fire, preliminary evidence implies that a technical malfunction or electrical problem may have caused this fire. An investigation has been initiated by authorities, and experts are scrutinizing the vehicle to determine where the fire started.

Strong safety protocols are crucial in large-scale urban infrastructure projects, as demonstrated by the episode. One of Mumbai's landmark transportation projects, the Coastal Road is now equipped with advanced safety equipment such as fire alarms, surveillance cameras (CVC), emergency communication networks and ventilation facilities.

As the damaged vehicle was cleared by officials and precautions were taken, traffic on that stretch of road remained slow for some time. Normal traffic flow resumed despite delays caused by commuters, even though the area was declared safe. A lot of people who travelled by air later complimented the rapid response from firefighters and the effectiveness of the tunnel's safety system in managing the situation.

The police have urged drivers to regularly service their vehicles and prioritize the maintenance of their engines and electrical systems. Furthermore, road users were urged not to panic or act recklessly without following official instructions if an emergency occurs within the confines of tunnels or enclosed roads.

Fortunately, there were no casualties, which highlights the efficiency of the emergency response mechanism. After completing their investigation, officials are anticipated to release a detailed report.

The fire's temporary disruption was a demonstration of the importance of preparedness and rapid response in managing unexpected emergencies on modern transport networks, as it also tested the safety infrastructure along the Coastal Road.
