Commonwealth Games 2026: India's Medal Rush Continues as Gavit Wins Gold, Boxing Team Assures 10 Medals
IIE DIGITAL: India enjoyed another memorable day at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with its athletes delivering standout performances across multiple disciplines. The biggest highlight came in para athletics, where Dilip Mahadu Gavit clinched gold while Mohammed Basil Morsinganakath secured silver, giving India a historic one-two finish in the men's T47 100m event. Long jumper Murali Sreeshankar also added to the country's tally by claiming his second consecutive Commonwealth silver, as Indian boxers guaranteed six more medals to keep the nation's impressive campaign on track.
Gavit stole the spotlight by clocking 10.71 seconds, setting a new Commonwealth Games record while registering his season's best performance. His teammate Basil followed closely with 10.83 seconds, earning silver with his personal best timing of the season. The remarkable finish marked one of India's finest moments in para athletics at the Games.
The gold medal was India's third of the Glasgow edition, following earlier triumphs by Mirabai Chanu in the women's 48kg weightlifting event and Sharmila Dhankar in the women's F57 shot put.
Murali Sreeshankar continued his consistency on the international stage by leaping 8.09 metres to finish second in the men's long jump. With this result, he successfully defended the silver medal he had won at the previous Commonwealth Games.
India's boxing contingent also enjoyed a productive outing. Six more Indian boxers booked their places in the semifinals, ensuring at least bronze medals. With those results, India's confirmed boxing medal tally has now risen to 10, further strengthening hopes of a record haul in Glasgow.
There was more good news from athletics, where sprinter Animesh Kujur advanced to the semifinals of the men's 200m event. In the field events, Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill qualified for the men's shot put final, keeping India's medal hopes alive.
India also impressed in lawn bowls, with the pair of Navneet Singh and Dinesh Kumar defeating Namibia to move one step closer to the podium.
With medals pouring in across para athletics, boxing, athletics and lawn bowls, India continues to build momentum as the Commonwealth Games enter a crucial phase, raising expectations of an even bigger medal tally in the coming days.
