Record for most goals: Klose's message to Messi

IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 23: German former striker Miroslav Klose congratulated Lionel Messi on Tuesday after the Argentine superstar broke his record for most goals in World Cup history.

Before the current edition, Klose stood at the top with 16 goals as the World Cup-winning legend. In his first match against Algeria, Messi equalled the record with a hat-trick. Later, in a 2–0 victory over Austria, he scored two more goals to make the record his own, officially surpassing the German great.

Messi, who is playing in his sixth World Cup tournament, now has 18 goals in total in the competition. Following the loss of his record, Klose expressed his reaction in German media, saying, “For me, Lionel Messi is the greatest footballer of all time. Congratulations, champion.”

Klose also admitted early in the tournament that he had already anticipated his record would not last much longer, and he had essentially welcomed Messi to break it even before the World Cup began.
