IIE DIGITAL DESK ;  September 22: The Indian women’s cricket team produced a commanding performance in the final of the 2026 Asian Games, defeating Sri Lanka by 147 runs to secure the gold medal. Batting first, India posted a formidable 216/3 in 20 overs, before their bowlers dismantled the Sri Lankan batting line-up and bowled them out for just 69 runs. The victory gave India its first gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games and allowed the women’s cricket team to successfully defend the Asian Games title won at Hangzhou in 2023.

India entered the final after an impressive semi-final victory over Bangladesh and carried that momentum into the title clash against Sri Lanka. The final, played at Korogi Sports Park in Nisshin, Japan, turned into a one-sided contest as India dominated almost every department of the game. From the opening overs of their innings to the final Sri Lankan wicket, the Indian team maintained control and eventually completed one of its biggest victories in women’s T20 cricket. 

India won the toss and opted to bat first, and the decision quickly paid off. Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma provided India with an explosive start, putting the Sri Lankan bowlers under pressure during the powerplay. Mandhana went on to score 79 runs, while Shafali contributed 48, giving India a strong platform from which to launch a huge total. Their opening partnership set the tone for an innings in which India consistently attacked the Sri Lankan bowling attack.

Mandhana's innings was particularly significant as she combined controlled strokeplay with aggressive hitting to keep the scoreboard moving. Her performance gave India the perfect foundation, while Shafali's attacking approach ensured that Sri Lanka never managed to settle into a comfortable rhythm. With the openers putting together a substantial partnership, India had already established a strong position before the middle and lower order took over.

Richa Ghosh then provided a spectacular finish to India's innings. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed an unbeaten 49, including an explosive final over that helped India cross the 200-run mark. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur also contributed to the total, and India's innings eventually finished at 216/3. It was reported as the highest total in the history of women's cricket at the Asian Games, giving Sri Lanka an extremely difficult target of 217 runs.

The enormous target put immediate pressure on Sri Lanka, and India's bowlers took full advantage. Shafali Verma made an important contribution with the ball during the powerplay, claiming two early wickets and preventing Sri Lanka from building momentum. The early breakthroughs meant that the Sri Lankan batting order was under pressure almost from the beginning of the chase.

Sri Lanka's hopes rested significantly on captain Chamari Athapaththu, whose presence at the crease offered the team some possibility of building a recovery. However, Deepti Sharma produced the crucial breakthrough by dismissing the experienced Sri Lankan batter. Once Athapaththu departed, Sri Lanka's prospects of mounting a successful chase became increasingly remote.

Deepti's contribution was part of a collective bowling performance from the Indian team. Rather than depending on one individual, India continued to take wickets at regular intervals and restricted Sri Lanka's scoring opportunities. The bowlers maintained pressure through disciplined spells, while the fielding unit supported them by preventing easy runs.

The Sri Lankan batting line-up struggled to cope with the enormous required run rate and India's disciplined attack. Wickets continued to fall as the innings progressed, and the chase quickly turned into a battle for survival rather than a realistic pursuit of the target. Eventually, Sri Lanka were dismissed for just 69 runs, handing India a massive 147-run victory. 

The margin of victory underlined India's dominance in the final. A powerful batting display was followed by an equally impressive bowling performance, leaving Sri Lanka with no opportunity to challenge India's authority. India's bowlers repeatedly found breakthroughs, while the Sri Lankan batters were unable to establish any meaningful partnership.

The victory also marked India's first gold medal of the 2026 Asian Games. The women's cricket team had entered the tournament as defending champions after winning gold at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou. By defeating Sri Lanka in the final, India retained its position at the top of the women's cricket competition at the Asian Games. 

For the Indian women's cricket team, the triumph represents the culmination of a highly successful tournament campaign. Their progress from the early stages through the semi-final and into the final was marked by strong performances with both bat and ball. The final victory added the gold medal to that campaign in emphatic fashion.

The success also highlighted the depth of India's squad. Mandhana and Shafali established the innings, Richa Ghosh provided the explosive finish, while the bowlers collectively dismantled Sri Lanka's chase. Deepti Sharma and Shafali were among those making decisive contributions with the ball, while the wider bowling unit continued to apply pressure throughout the innings. 

The Asian Games gold therefore becomes another significant milestone for Indian women's cricket. After dominating Sri Lanka by 147 runs in the final, India finished the competition with the gold medal and another memorable title triumph. The combination of aggressive batting, disciplined bowling and consistent teamwork ensured that India's campaign ended with a comprehensive victory and a place in the record books.
