IIE DIGITAL DESK :The development that could impact the participation of Bangladeshi cricketers in the upcoming Pakistan Super League, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has indicated that its players, including star pacer Mustafizur Rahman, may not be allowed to feature in the tournament without explicit approval from the government. The decision comes in the backdrop of escalating geopolitical tensions in the region, raising serious concerns over player safety.

Mustafizur Rahman had earlier made headlines as the only Bangladeshi cricketer to secure a contract in the upcoming Indian Premier League.  his stint was cut short after the Board of Control for Cricket in India directed his franchise, Kolkata Knight Riders, to release him. That episode had already stirred significant debate within cricketing circles, with tensions spilling over into broader sporting relations.

Despite missing out on the IPL, Mustafizur and several other Bangladeshi players were looking forward to participating in the PSL. However, their hopes have now been thrown into uncertainty. While the BCB had initially been open to granting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to the players, it has now taken a cautious stance, making it clear that the final call will depend on the Bangladesh government’s assessment of the situation.

The shift in position is largely influenced by recent geopolitical developments. Reports of a missile strike by Pakistan in Afghanistan, which allegedly targeted a rehabilitation facility in Kabul and resulted in significant casualties, have heightened tensions in the region. This has prompted the Bangladesh government to reassess the safety implications of sending its players to Pakistan for a high-profile tournament like the PSL.

Speaking on the issue, Nazmul Abedin, chairman of cricket operations at the BCB, emphasized that while the board generally allows players to participate in overseas leagues, the current circumstances demand a more cautious approach. He noted that in normal situations, players are encouraged to play in international franchise tournaments, but given the prevailing security concerns, the board has formally sought the government’s opinion. The final decision, he clarified, will be taken in accordance with the government’s directive.

Adding another layer of complexity is Bangladesh’s upcoming international schedule, which includes an ODI and T20I series against New Zealand national cricket team. Participation in the PSL could potentially clash with national commitments, as players would be required to attend preparatory camps ahead of the series. To address this, the BCB had proposed a split-window arrangement for NOCs, allowing players to feature in certain phases of the PSL while remaining available for national duties.

Mustafizur Rahman was initially granted NOC for the period between March 26 and April 12, with a second window from April 24 to May 3. Similar arrangements were considered for other players, including Nahid Rana, Parvez Hossain Emon, Shoriful Islam, Tanzid Hasan Tamim, and Rishad Hossain, all of whom have secured contracts in the PSL.

with security concerns now taking precedence, even these carefully planned arrangements remain uncertain. The situation has placed both the players and the cricket board in a difficult position, balancing professional opportunities with national safety considerations.

The final decision from the Bangladesh government will determine whether its players can take part in one of the most prominent T20 leagues in the region or whether geopolitical realities will once again reshape the sporting landscape.
