IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Taipei, August 1: Rising Indian badminton star Tanvi Sharma produced another outstanding performance to book her place in the women's singles final of the Taipei Open 2026, defeating fifth seed and home favourite Huang Yu-Hsun in straight games 21-17, 21-11 on Saturday. The victory marked Tanvi's first appearance in a BWF Super 300 final this season and continued her impressive run at the tournament after overcoming Thailand's Supanida Katethong in the quarter-finals.

Ranked World No. 34, Tanvi controlled the semifinal from the very beginning, displaying remarkable composure, sharp court coverage, and consistent attacking play throughout the contest at the Taipei Arena. She denied the Taiwanese shuttler any opportunity to build momentum, dominating the rallies and sealing the match in convincing fashion to move one step closer to her biggest title of the season.

With her victory, the possibility of an all-Indian women's singles final has emerged. On the other side of the draw, Unnati Hooda is set to face Vietnam's sixth seed Nguyen Thuy Linh in the second semifinal. Unnati is competing in her first BWF World Tour semifinal of the 2026 season, and a victory would set up an all-Indian title clash against Tanvi.

Both Tanvi Sharma and Unnati Hooda have been named in the Indian squad for the 2026 Asian Games, underlining their growing importance in India's next generation of badminton talent. Unnati, currently ranked World No. 28, has enjoyed a steady rise on the international circuit and now has the opportunity to reach her maiden World Tour final this year.

While India's women's singles campaign continued to flourish, the country's challenge in the men's singles competition came to an end. In the quarter-finals, India's remaining hope Kiran suffered a comprehensive defeat against fourth seed Yudai Okimoto of Japan, losing 21-12, 21-10 in straight games. The Japanese shuttler dominated the contest throughout, leaving Kiran unable to mount any significant resistance.

The earlier exit of HS Prannoy in the Round of 16, Kiran had become India's only surviving men's singles player in the tournament. However, his defeat in the quarter-finals brought India's men's singles campaign at the Taipei Open to a close.

India's challenge in the men's doubles had already ended on Wednesday when the pair of Bhargava Ram Arigela and Vishnu Tej Gobburu were eliminated in the opening round of the competition. Their early exit meant India no longer had any representatives in the doubles events.

With Tanvi Sharma now through to the championship match and Unnati Hooda still in contention, India's hopes of winning the women's singles title remain alive. Tanvi's commanding semifinal victory has not only secured her place in the final but has also reinforced her status as one of India's brightest emerging badminton stars on the international circuit.
