IIE DIGITAL DESK : West Bengal after claims made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regarding a reported directive linked to the singing of the national song ‘Vande Mataram’ in educational institutions, including madrasas. According to statements attributed to BJP leaders, a recent move is said to have expanded the requirement of singing ‘Vande Mataram’ during morning assemblies to include all government, government-aided schools, and now madrasas as well.

The BJP has described the alleged decision as an attempt to establish a “uniform system” across all educational institutions and has strongly defended the move, arguing that it promotes equality and removes what it calls “appeasement politics.” Party leaders, including the state leadership, have reportedly welcomed the development and claimed that earlier governments had not implemented similar guidelines despite central-level discussions on the matter.

The controversy intensified after BJP representatives publicly supported the reported directive, stating that it corrects historical practices and ensures a common national practice in schools. Social media posts from the party further emphasized their stance that educational institutions should follow “one uniform rule” without differentiation based on institution type.

The issue has also sparked political debate and criticism from opposing voices, who view the reported directive as sensitive given the religious and cultural context of madrasas. The matter has added to the ongoing political tension in the state over education policy, identity, and the role of national symbols in institutional settings.

The claims remain politically disputed, with differing interpretations from ruling and opposition camps, and the situation continues to draw public and political attention.
