IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata | June 22, 2026 : The presentation of the 2026–27 State Budget, the Finance Minister declared the proposal for the formation of five new districts across West Bengal. The proposed new districts are Kolkata, Basirhat, Sundarban, Jangipur, and Arambagh. The decision is expected to bring government services closer to the people and improve administrative efficiency at the grassroots level.

The creation of new districts, the government has also proposed the establishment of a new police district in Contai (Kanthi) to strengthen law and order administration in the region. A new subdivision will also be formed in Gopiballavpur to improve local governance and ensure faster delivery of public services.

The budget further unveiled plans for expanding urban administrative infrastructure by proposing the creation of new municipalities in several areas across the state. The proposed new municipalities include Shibmandir, Gazole, Chanchal, Belda, Bagnan, Jaigaon, Kolaghat, Kamarpukur, and Tungidighi. The government believes that these new municipal bodies will help improve civic facilities, accelerate infrastructure development, and ensure better management of rapidly developing urban and semi-urban areas.

The Finance Minister also announced a significant new policy regarding the issuance of liquor shop licences in the state. Under the new rules, no liquor licence will be granted within a radius of one kilometre from any educational institution, hospital, or religious place. However, in the jurisdiction of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, the minimum required distance for granting a liquor licence has been fixed at 500 metres.

These announcements reflect the government’s broader vision of administrative decentralisation, improved governance, and balanced urban development. The proposed creation of new districts, police and administrative units, municipalities, and stricter regulations on liquor outlets are expected to have a major impact on the state’s administrative landscape and public policy in the coming years.
