
IIE DIGITAL DESK ; June 18: Ghana secured a dramatic victory in their opening World Cup match, defeating Panama 1–0 in a Group ‘L’ clash held in Toronto, Canada, on Thursday. A stoppage-time winner in the fifth minute of added time from Caleb Irenky sealed the crucial victory for the African side.
The first half, Panama created a few attacking moves, but Ghana’s defensive line stood firm and remained disciplined throughout. On the other hand, Ghana also tried to break through the opposition defense through Kamaldeen Sulemana and Ernest Nuamah, but neither side managed to find success in front of goal, resulting in a goalless first half.
The second half saw a much more intense battle between the two teams. Panama made several attempts inside Ghana’s penalty box, but they were unable to convert any of their chances into goals. Ghana also increased their attacking pressure, but for most of the match they struggled to break down Panama’s solid defensive structure.
Just when the match seemed destined to end in a draw, the dramatic moment arrived. Deep into stoppage time after the completion of 90 minutes, Ghana finally found the decisive goal they were searching for. With that late strike against Panama, Ghana began their World Cup campaign with a thrilling 1–0 victory.
