IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, May 21: India’s maritime defence capabilities, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) has successfully launched the Indian Navy’s first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), named INS Sanghamitra, at its Kolkata shipyard on Thursday. The launch ceremony was conducted with traditional Vedic chants and ceremonial rituals, reflecting the long-standing maritime heritage associated with Indian shipbuilding.

The historic vessel was ceremonially launched by Sarita Vatsayan, wife of Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, in the presence of senior officials from the Indian Navy, defence experts, and top executives of GRSE. The event marked another milestone in India’s growing indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities under the government’s flagship initiatives of “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat.”

Sanghamitra represents a new generation of offshore patrol vessels designed to enhance India’s coastal surveillance and maritime security infrastructure. Built entirely with indigenous technology, the vessel is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening naval operations across strategic waters, including coastal defence, surveillance, anti-smuggling missions, and anti-piracy operations.

The NGOPV has been developed as a highly versatile warship capable of undertaking multiple roles. It is specifically designed for long-range maritime patrolling, monitoring of coastal regions, search and rescue operations, and emergency humanitarian assistance during natural disasters. Its advanced design ensures operational efficiency in both peacetime and conflict scenarios, making it a key asset for the Indian Navy’s future fleet expansion.

Officials present at the launch highlighted that the successful induction of Sanghamitra into the naval production pipeline underscores GRSE’s growing prominence in India’s defence shipbuilding sector. Kolkata-based GRSE continues to remain one of the country’s leading defence public sector undertakings, contributing significantly to naval modernization efforts.

Defence analysts have also noted that this development strengthens India’s strategic maritime posture in the Indian Ocean Region, where increased surveillance and rapid response capabilities are becoming increasingly critical amid evolving regional security challenges.

The launch of INS Sanghamitra not only reinforces India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing but also places Kolkata firmly on the national map as a key hub for advanced naval shipbuilding technology. The achievement is being seen as a matter of pride not just for West Bengal but for the entire nation, symbolizing India’s steady progress toward maritime strength and technological independence.
