Weather Update: North Bengal on Heavy Rain Watch, South to See Scattered Showers
IIE DIGITAL: Although the deep depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal has weakened and moved towards Chhattisgarh, the monsoon remains active across West Bengal, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting continued rainfall over the coming days.
South Bengal is expected to experience intermittent light to moderate showers, while North Bengal is likely to bear the brunt of the monsoon with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected from the weekend into next week.
On Friday, scattered rain is likely over North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum and Paschim Bardhaman. Gusty winds of 30–40 kmph may accompany the showers in isolated places.
No major weather warning has been issued for South Bengal until Tuesday. However, heavy rainfall is likely to return from Tuesday in Birbhum and Murshidabad, with South 24 Parganas, Purba Medinipur and Purba Bardhaman also expected to receive heavy showers from Wednesday onward.
Kolkata is likely to witness spells of light rain through the day under the influence of the monsoon trough. With the low-pressure system moving away, sea conditions have improved and no advisory has been issued for fishermen.
Meanwhile, North Bengal is expected to receive significantly heavier rainfall. Heavy showers are forecast on Friday in Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Uttar Dinajpur. From Sunday, the intensity is expected to increase, prompting the IMD to issue an Orange Alert for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar. By Tuesday, heavy rain is likely across all North Bengal districts, including Malda and Dakshin Dinajpur.
The weather office said the remnant low-pressure system over western Chhattisgarh, combined with the active monsoon trough stretching from Rajasthan to the Bay of Bengal, is drawing abundant moisture inland, sustaining rainfall across the state.
