IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, May 5, 2025 — In a significant move to enhance urban mobility, Kolkata Metro Railway has announced a substantial increase in the number of daily services on the Purple Line, specifically between Joka and Majerhat stations. Starting today, the number of trains operating on this stretch will more than double, rising from 18 to 40 daily services. This initiative aims to provide commuters with more frequent and reliable metro services during weekdays
The Purple Line, currently operating between Joka and Majerhat in the southwestern part of Kolkata, has been a vital corridor for daily commuters. With the increase in services, trains will now run at intervals of 22 minutes, a significant improvement from the previous 50-minute gaps. This enhancement is expected to alleviate congestion and reduce waiting times for passengers, thereby improving the overall commuting experience.
According to metro officials, the first train from Majerhat will now depart at 8:27 AM, advancing from its previous 8:55 AM start. The first train from Joka will continue to depart at 8:30 AM as before. The last trains from both stations will now leave at 3:28 PM, slightly adjusting from the earlier timings of 3:35 PM from Majerhat and 3:10 PM from Joka. These revised timings are designed to better align with peak commuting hours and to accommodate the increased frequency of services
Despite the increase in weekday services, the Purple Line will continue to remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Metro Railway authorities have stated that this schedule will remain in place until further notice. The decision to maintain the weekend closure is based on current operational considerations and passenger demand patterns
The Purple Line's expansion is part of a broader effort to improve Kolkata's metro network. Currently, construction is underway to extend the line from Majerhat to Esplanade, which will eventually connect the Purple Line with the existing Blue and Green Lines. This integration is expected to enhance connectivity across the city and provide commuters with more seamless travel options
The increase in services on the Joka–Majerhat stretch is a response to growing commuter demand and is aimed at providing a more efficient and comfortable travel experience. By reducing wait times and increasing the number of trains, the Kolkata Metro Railway seeks to encourage more residents to utilize the metro system, thereby easing traffic congestion and promoting sustainable urban transportation.
Commuters have welcomed the move, expressing optimism that the increased frequency will make daily travel more convenient. Many have noted that the shorter intervals between trains will allow for greater flexibility in planning their journeys and reduce the stress associated with long waiting periods.
As Kolkata continues to grow and evolve, the expansion and enhancement of its metro services remain critical to meeting the transportation needs of its residents. The Kolkata Metro Railway's commitment to improving service frequency and connectivity reflects its dedication to providing efficient and reliable public transportation solutions.
Passengers are encouraged to stay informed about service schedules and updates through official metro channels and to plan their journeys accordingly. With these improvements, the Kolkata Metro aims to offer a more comfortable and accessible commuting experience for all.
