IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Kolkata, June 18: Residents of Kolkata and South Bengal are unlikely to get relief from the prevailing humid and uncomfortable weather anytime soon. According to the Alipore Meteorological Department forecast, the chances of thunderstorms and rainfall may increase across several districts of South Bengal from June 20. However, most areas are expected to receive only light to moderate showers.
The monsoon season already having arrived in the region, South Bengal continues to experience a lack of significant rainfall. The southwest monsoon remains weak, resulting in little to no effective rain across most parts of the region. Occasional light to moderate showers have failed to bring any meaningful relief from the sultry conditions. Meanwhile, North Bengal is receiving comparatively better rainfall activity, providing some relief there.
Thursday morning, Kolkata recorded a minimum temperature of 29.7 degrees Celsius, which is 2.7 degrees above normal, further intensifying discomfort for residents. According to the Alipore weather office, heavy rainfall is likely in parts of North Bengal, including Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Cooch Behar. Other districts in North Bengal are also expected to receive rain in the coming days.
Several districts in South Bengal, including West Burdwan, Purulia, Bankura, Jhargram, and West Midnapore, are under a yellow alert due to hot and uncomfortable weather conditions. The humid and oppressive heat continues to affect daily life in Kolkata as well, with no immediate relief in sight.
