IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, March 18: In a strategic move that underscores merit and performance over star power, Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee unveiled the Trinamool Congress candidate list for the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections from the party’s Kalighat office on Tuesday. The list features 291 candidates, balancing experienced leaders with young and promising faces, signaling a clear focus on organizational strength and track record rather than celebrity influence.

The announcement sees Mamata Banerjee herself contesting from Bhabanipur as expected, while Abhishek Banerjee finalized the majority of candidates, giving preference to performance and age-appropriate leadership. A total of 74 sitting MLAs were not granted tickets due to performance concerns and age considerations. Notable leaders such as state ministers Biplab Roychowdhury, Manoj Tiwari, and Tajmul Hossain were excluded, while senior bureaucrats and stalwarts like Nirmal Ghosh also did not receive tickets.

The party has introduced fresh faces across constituencies, including rising leaders such as Ritabrata Banerjee, Trinankur Bhattacharya, councilor Sandeepan Saha, and newcomers from political and cultural spheres like Arpita Ghosh, former MP from Balurghat, and Asian Games gold medalist Swapna Barman. Former cricketer Shivshankar Pal and academic Tanushree Hansda are also part of the new entrant list.

Addressing the announcement, Abhishek Banerjee emphasized that performance would be the key criterion for ticket allocation, stating that rewards will follow demonstrated work and party loyalty rather than references or influence. Party insiders confirmed that several top-ranking leaders who had relied solely on internal party positioning were denied tickets, highlighting a shift toward grassroots and field performance.

The candidate list also reflects significant seat adjustments, with 15 sitting MLAs shifted to different constituencies. Soham Chakraborty has been moved from Chandipur to Karimipur in Nadia, while former IPS officer Humayun Kabir has been fielded from Domkal in Murshidabad. Former ministers and senior leaders continue to retain key seats, though several seasoned politicians have been replaced with younger leaders aged between 41 and 60.

The list avoids the inclusion of Tollywood celebrities, a departure from past elections. Kanchan Mallick and Chiranjit were not given tickets, while Arpita Ghosh represents Balurghat. The reshuffle reflects a calculated strategy to rejuvenate party leadership with fresh faces and experienced organizational leaders to maintain voter confidence across the state.

The Trinamool Congress’s announcement has generated excitement and anticipation, particularly in districts such as Hooghly, Bankura, and Murshidabad, where new candidates are expected to energize the party’s base. Mamata Banerjee and Abhishek Banerjee’s emphasis on performance and youth marks a decisive approach aimed at consolidating TMC’s position in the upcoming assembly elections while balancing continuity with renewal.
