Patna | August 3, 2026: The vote counting for the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar has produced a major political surprise, with Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor taking a commanding lead over the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate in what has long been regarded as one of the saffron party's strongest electoral bastions. Kishor is currently ahead of BJP nominee Neeraj Kumar Sinha by thousands of votes, signalling what could become one of the biggest political upsets in the state in recent years.

What has attracted the greatest attention is Prashant Kishor's vote share during the early rounds of counting. Initial trends indicate that his vote share has climbed close to 50 percent, a figure considered highly significant in Bihar's electoral politics, particularly in a constituency that has remained firmly under BJP control for nearly three decades.

According to data released by the Election Commission, counting in the Bankipur Assembly by-election is scheduled to take place over 31 rounds. At the end of the 13th round of counting, Prashant Kishor of the Jan Suraaj Party had secured 26,113 votes. He was leading BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 7,119 votes. Sinha had received 18,994 votes, while Rekha Gupta had secured 5,583 votes.

Prashant Kishor's lead is being viewed as politically significant because Bankipur has been a BJP stronghold since 1995. For nearly three decades, the constituency has consistently elected BJP candidates and has been regarded as one of the party's safest seats in Bihar. The constituency was initially represented by Naveen Kishore Prasad Sinha, and later by his son, Nitin Nabin, who went on to become the BJP's national president and represented Bankipur in the state assembly.

In the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, BJP candidate Nitin Nabin won the Bankipur seat with an impressive 62.66 percent of the vote. After subsequently being elected to the Rajya Sabha, he resigned from the Assembly, leading to the by-election. Given the BJP's overwhelming victory margin and vote share in the previous election, Bankipur was widely considered one of the party's most secure political fortresses.

This time, however, Prashant Kishor has mounted an unexpectedly strong challenge. After spending years as one of India's most well-known election strategists, Kishor entered active politics by launching the Jan Suraaj Party. The stakes are particularly high because the Jan Suraaj Party failed to win a single seat in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections. Even in Bankipur, the party's candidate had secured less than five percent of the total votes during that election. Against that backdrop, Prashant Kishor himself decided to contest the by-election, making it a crucial test of both his political credibility and the future prospects of his newly formed party.

Political observers believe that one of the key themes of Kishor's campaign has been the promise of political change. This represents a decline of nearly seven percentage points. Despite the reduced turnout, the Jan Suraaj Party has claimed that a significant "silent vote" in favour of political change has benefited Prashant Kishor.

Bankipur is also known for having a sizeable upper-caste electorate, a section of voters that has traditionally been considered a reliable support base for the BJP. Political circles are now closely watching whether Prashant Kishor has succeeded in attracting a meaningful portion of these voters, something that could explain the dramatic shift seen in the counting trends.

The outcome of the Bankipur by-election carries enormous significance for both Prashant Kishor and the Jan Suraaj Party. A victory in this constituency would end nearly thirty years of uninterrupted BJP dominance and could establish the Jan Suraaj Party as a serious political force in Bihar.
