Colonel Sophia Qureshi: Trailblazing Indian Army Officer at the Helm of Operation Sindoor Briefing

IIE DIGITAL DESK  : May 7, 2025 — Colonel Sophia Qureshi, a distinguished officer of the Indian Army's Corps of Signals, garnered national attention today as she co-led the official press briefing on Operation Sindoor, India's strategic military response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Her presence alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh of the Indian Air Force and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri marked a historic moment, underscoring the evolving role of women in India's defense forces 

Born in 1981 in Vadodara, Gujarat, Colonel Qureshi hails from a family with deep military roots; her grandfather served in the Indian Army. She was commissioned into the Army in 1999 through the Officers Training Academy in Chennai. Holding a postgraduate degree in biochemistry, she chose to serve in the Corps of Signals, a branch pivotal to military communications and information systems  

Her career is marked by several groundbreaking achievements. In 2016, she became the first woman officer to command an Indian Army contingent in a multinational military exercise. Leading a 40-member team at Exercise Force 18 in Pune, she stood out as the only female commander among 18 participating nations, focusing on peacekeeping operations and humanitarian efforts . 

Colonel Qureshi's commitment to international peace is evident from her tenure with the United Nations Peacekeeping Operations. In 2006, she served in the United Nations Mission in Congo, contributing to ceasefire monitoring and humanitarian assistance in conflict zones. Her six-year association with UN peacekeeping missions highlights her dedication to global stability and cooperation . 

Married to an officer in the Mechanised Infantry, Colonel Qureshi balances her demanding military career with family life. Her journey serves as an inspiration to many, especially young women aspiring to serve the nation. She has often encouraged women to join the armed forces, emphasizing the honor and pride associated with serving the country . 

During the press conference on Operation Sindoor, Colonel Qureshi articulated the precision and intent behind the strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. She emphasized that the operation was carefully planned to avoid civilian casualties and was a measured response to the heinous attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives  

Her leadership in this high-profile briefing not only showcased her strategic acumen but also symbolized the increasing prominence of women in India's military hierarchy. As the nation continues to grapple with security challenges, figures like Colonel Sophia Qureshi stand as testaments to dedication, resilience, and the progressive strides of the Indian Armed Forces.
