IIE Digital Desk : Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai was sworn in as the 52nd Chief Justice of India (CJI) at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, administered by President Droupadi Murmu. His appointment is notable for being the first time a Buddhist has held the highest judicial position in the country, and he is only the second individual from the Scheduled Castes to do so, following Justice K.G. Balakrishnan.

Born on November 24, 1960, in Amravati, Maharashtra, Justice Gavai hails from a family deeply influenced by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar's ideals. His father, R.S. Gavai, was a prominent social activist and political figure who embraced Buddhism alongside Dr. Ambedkar in 1956. Justice Gavai began his legal career in 1985 and was appointed as a judge of the Bombay High Court in 2003. He was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2019 and has since been involved in several landmark rulings, including the judgment upholding demonetization and the verdict declaring the electoral bonds scheme unconstitutional.

In his address on the eve of taking oath, Justice Gavai reaffirmed his commitment to upholding social and political justice, aligning with Dr. Ambedkar's ideals of equality and dignity for the marginalized. He emphasized that his role as a judge and head of the Indian judiciary presents an opportunity to promote these principles, aiming to address broader societal inequalities.

Justice Gavai's tenure as CJI is expected to last until November 23, 2025. His appointment is seen as a significant step towards greater representation and inclusivity within the Indian legal system, reflecting progress in diversity among the nation's top judicial posts.

The swearing-in ceremony was marked by a poignant moment when Justice Gavai sought blessings by touching his mother's feet, symbolizing humility and respect for his roots.

As Chief Justice, Justice Gavai will oversee the functioning of the Supreme Court and play a crucial role in upholding the Constitution and guiding the Indian legal system. His appointment is not just a ceremonial transition but represents a significant moment in India's socio-judicial history, reflecting progress toward greater inclusivity and representation in the judiciary.

Justice Gavai's journey from humble beginnings to the highest judicial office serves as an inspiration, highlighting the possibilities within India's democratic framework for individuals from all backgrounds to rise to positions of national importance.
