IIE DIGITAL: Climate activist and education reformer Sonam Wangchuk has been discharged from Medanta Hospital in Gurugram and is preparing to return to Ladakh after paying tribute to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

Sharing the news on social media platform X, Wangchuk wrote, “And finally.... I’m being discharged from the hospital. Will be going to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and then back to the mountains.”

He also thanked everyone who stood by him during his hospital stay and expressed his gratitude to the team of doctors and medical staff at Medanta Hospital for their support and treatment.

Wangchuk had joined the protest movement on June 28 and continued his indefinite hunger strike for 26 days. During the agitation, he was taken to Safdarjung Hospital on July 18, a move he later described as feeling like being placed under detention.

Following a Delhi High Court order, he was shifted to Medanta Hospital, where he continued his recovery.

The activist was among the key figures of the 36-day agitation led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), which ended on Saturday following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. The protest, which began on June 20, raised concerns over examination-related issues and demanded reforms in the education system.

After leaving the hospital, Wangchuk said his immediate plan is to visit Rajghat to honour Mahatma Gandhi before heading back to Ladakh. With his return to the mountains, the activist is set to continue his work on environmental and educational issues from his home region.
