IIE DIGITAL: India witnessed a landmark moment at the Commonwealth Games as its athletes produced a stunning medal-winning performance on the fifth day of the competition. In a rare achievement, two Indian participants stood on the podium in the same event, with one winning gold and another claiming bronze — a first for the country at the Commonwealth Games.

The day began with a strong show in weightlifting as Gyaneshwari Yadav secured a silver medal in the women’s 53kg category. Delivering the finest performance of her career, she lifted a combined weight of 199kg. Although she missed the gold, her impressive effort added another medal to India’s growing tally.

India’s success story continued on the athletics field, where Sarvesh Kushare created a new record for the country in men’s high jump. His silver medal marked India’s best-ever performance in the Commonwealth Games high jump event, improving on the previous record of a bronze medal. With this achievement, Kushare became India’s most successful high jumper in Commonwealth Games history.

The most historic moment of the day came from para athletics. In the women’s F57 shot put event, Indian athletes delivered a memorable double success. Sharmila Dhankad produced a gold-winning throw of 9.81 metres, becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Para Games.

Adding to the celebration, Shilpa Shaila also finished with a bronze medal in the same event. She had initially missed the podium after finishing fourth, but a disqualification following the cancellation of the third-place athlete’s throw moved her into the medal position. The achievement marked the first time India secured two medals in a single Commonwealth Games event.

The medal celebrations continued in weightlifting, with Valluri Ajay Babu winning silver in the men’s 79kg category after lifting a total of 330kg. Bindyarani Devi added another medal to India’s collection by securing bronze in the women’s 58kg category with a combined lift of 199kg.

Indian boxing also brought encouraging developments, with Sachin Siwach, Ankush Panghal and Sakshi Chaudhary moving closer to medal-winning performances. However, the athletics events produced mixed results, as some of India’s leading contenders, including M. Sreeshankar and Gurindervir Singh, failed to achieve their expected targets.

With six medals coming home on a single day, India’s campaign at the Commonwealth Games reached a new high. The remarkable performances not only strengthened the medal tally but also showcased the country’s growing dominance across multiple sporting disciplines.
