IIE DIGITAL DESK : Kolkata, May 22: Historic celebrations swept through the red-and-gold half of Kolkata on Thursday as East Bengal FC scripted a memorable chapter in Indian football history by becoming champions of both the men’s and women’s top-tier football leagues in the country. The club ended a 22-year wait for a major men’s top-flight league title after clinching the Indian Super League crown, while the women’s team successfully defended their Indian Women’s League title earlier this season.

The triumph in the Indian Super League marked a significant achievement for East Bengal, whose last major league success in men’s football came during the 2003-04 season when they lifted the National Football League trophy. Since then, the club and its passionate supporters had endured years of disappointment and near misses. The latest title victory has therefore been celebrated as a landmark moment in the club’s modern history.

Coached by Oscar Bruzon, East Bengal displayed remarkable determination in the title-deciding encounter at the Kishore Bharati Krirangan Stadium. Despite conceding first against Inter Kashi, the Kolkata giants staged an impressive comeback to secure a 2-1 victory. The fighting spirit shown by the players reflected the transformation of the squad under Bruzon’s guidance throughout the campaign.

The achievement has become even more special for the club as it came shortly after the women’s side retained the Indian Women’s League title. Guided by coach Anthony Andrews, the East Bengal women’s team, popularly known as the “Moshal Girls,” dominated the 2025-26 season with consistent performances. They sealed the championship with two rounds remaining and suffered only one defeat throughout the entire campaign.

The women’s side finished the season with an impressive tally of 39 points, underlining their superiority in the competition. Their successful title defence further strengthened East Bengal’s growing stature in Indian football and highlighted the club’s commitment to excellence across both men’s and women’s football.

The twin triumphs in the ISL and IWL have added a new dimension to East Bengal’s glorious legacy. Supporters across Kolkata and beyond celebrated the achievement with immense enthusiasm, viewing it as a proud moment for one of India’s most historic football institutions.
