IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Glasgow, July 24: The 2026 Commonwealth Games were officially declared open with a spectacular opening ceremony in Glasgow, Scotland, on Thursday night. Held at the OVO Hydro Arena, the grand event showcased a vibrant blend of Scotland's rich heritage, cultural traditions, music, creativity, and modern identity, setting the stage for 11 days of international sporting competition.

Britain's King Charles III formally declared the Games open in the presence of dignitaries, athletes, and thousands of spectators gathered inside the arena. Queen Camilla also attended the glittering ceremony, adding royal significance to the event. The opening ceremony featured dazzling cultural performances, artistic presentations, music, and visual displays celebrating Scotland's history and its place within the Commonwealth.

One of the major highlights of the evening was the traditional Parade of Nations, where athletes from participating countries marched into the arena carrying their national flags. The parade symbolised unity, friendship, and sporting excellence among the Commonwealth nations and territories taking part in the prestigious multi-sport event.

India's 126-member contingent was led by two of the country's most celebrated athletes—Olympic silver medallist weightlifter Mirabai Chanu and Olympic bronze medallist boxer Lovlina Borgohain. Mirabai proudly carried the Indian tricolour during the Parade of Nations, while Lovlina had the honour of carrying the Commonwealth Baton, representing India's sporting achievements and aspirations at the Games.

The Indian contingent received a warm welcome from spectators as the athletes entered the arena, raising hopes of another successful campaign after India's impressive performances in previous editions of the Commonwealth Games. The team comprises athletes competing across multiple disciplines and is expected to challenge for medals in several events.

Total of 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are participating in the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The competition will take place over 11 days, bringing together thousands of athletes competing at the highest level in pursuit of medals and national glory.

This year's Games will feature competition in 10 sports, with athletes contesting events across a wide range of disciplines. The tournament aims not only to celebrate sporting excellence but also to promote unity, diversity, and friendship among Commonwealth nations through the spirit of fair competition.

The spectacular opening ceremony successfully concluded, attention now shifts to the sporting action, where some of the world's finest athletes will compete for Commonwealth honours. India will be looking to build on its strong record at previous editions as its athletes begin their medal campaigns in Glasgow over the coming days.
