IIE DIGITAL DESK ;  June 17: Football legend Lionel Messi, at nearly 39 years of age, delivered a historic performance by scoring his first-ever World Cup hattrick. With this remarkable achievement, he also equalled the all-time World Cup goal record of 16 goals, previously held by Miroslav Klose.

Wednesday morning, in a Group J World Cup match, defending champions Argentina defeated Algeria 3–0 to begin their campaign in dominant fashion.

The very start of the match, Messi etched his name further into football history by becoming the first player to participate in six World Cup tournaments. His presence once again proved decisive as Argentina opened their campaign with a commanding win.

The 17th minute of the match played in Kansas City, the Argentina captain gave his team the lead with a brilliant goal. He doubled the advantage in the 60th minute, strengthening Argentina’s control over the game. Later, in the 76th minute, he completed his hattrick with another superb finish, sealing a memorable victory.

With this performance, Messi not only secured a historic hattrick but also reaffirmed his status as one of the greatest players in football history.

Argentina will play their second group-stage match against Austria on June 22.
