Putul Sonowal, Rupa-Pinky Duo Give India Early Medal Boost

IIE DIGITAL: India may face an uphill battle to match its medal haul from the previous Commonwealth Games, but the country’s athletes have made an encouraging start in Glasgow. The opening day brought plenty of excitement, with Putul Sonowal producing a major upset on her Commonwealth debut and the experienced Rupa Rani Tirkey-Pinky Singh duo securing a hard-fought win in lawn bowls.

Rupa and Pinky got India off the mark in the women’s pairs event against Malta. After comfortably taking the opening set, the Indian pair found themselves pushed into a tie-break following a narrow defeat in the second. The duo, however, kept their composure when it mattered most to seal the contest. Having played a key role in India’s gold-winning campaign in 2022, the pair will once again be hoping to go all the way.

Putul then grabbed the spotlight in the men’s singles. Making her Commonwealth Games debut, the Assam athlete faced a formidable opponent in Canada’s Ryan Bester, a former world champion and Commonwealth medallist. After edging the first set, Putul was outplayed in the second, setting up a tense decider. She responded brilliantly under pressure, winning the tie-break and completing a memorable upset against the much more experienced Bester.

India’s medal prospects have come under scrutiny this time after the Games programme was significantly reduced, with several sports that have traditionally delivered medals for the country being left out. India had returned from Birmingham in 2022 with 61 medals, finishing fourth overall, but replicating that performance could prove difficult this year.

For now, however, the performances of Putul, Rupa and Pinky have given the Indian contingent an early reason to celebrate. Their victories have set the tone for what could be a challenging but potentially rewarding campaign in Glasgow.
