IIE DIGITAL: Co-hosts Mexico booked their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Ecuador on Tuesday, ending a 40-year wait for a knockout-stage victory. Their last win in the competition's knockout rounds came in the year 1986.
Julián Quiñones and Raúl Jiménez struck in the opening half as Mexico eased to a 2-0 win over Ecuador by sealing their place in the FIFA World Cup Round of 16. Javier Aguirre's side will now take on the winners of the England vs DR Congo clash.
The victory also brought an end to Mexico's unwanted streak of eight successive knockout-stage exits, the longest such run in FIFA World Cup history.
The Round of 32 encounter was delayed by an hour after heavy rain and lightning forced a late start, making it only the second match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be disrupted by adverse weather conditions
