IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Belfast, June 29: Indian cricket witnessed a disappointing new chapter in Belfast as Ireland created history by defeating India 2-0 in the T20 International series. The victory marked Ireland's first-ever bilateral T20I series win over India and ended India's remarkable streak of remaining unbeaten in 16 consecutive bilateral T20I series. The defeat has also intensified scrutiny over India's performances under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

The Indian squad, featuring the majority of players who were part of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026-winning team, entered the series as overwhelming favourites. However, Ireland outplayed the visitors in both matches with disciplined performances in all departments, exposing several weaknesses in the Indian side.

The series also proved to be a disappointing beginning for Shreyas Iyer's tenure as India's T20 captain. After suffering defeat in the opening match, India failed to correct their mistakes in the second game, with shortcomings in batting, bowling and fielding once again proving costly. Ireland displayed greater organisation, confidence and composure throughout the series to complete a memorable whitewash on home soil.

Ireland's achievement becomes even more remarkable considering they were unable to field their strongest squad. Several key players missed the series due to injuries, forcing the hosts to hand T20 International debuts to four cricketers. Despite their inexperienced lineup, Ireland made excellent use of familiar home conditions and produced a fearless brand of cricket to defeat the reigning T20 world champions.

India's batting performance emerged as the biggest reason behind the series loss. Senior batters Sanju Samson, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan and captain Shreyas Iyer all failed to live up to expectations. Although Tilak Varma scored a half-century in the second match, questions were raised about the pace of his innings, which many believed failed to provide the momentum required in a T20 contest.

Axar Patel's batting form also continued to decline, adding to India's middle-order concerns. Debutant Suryansh Shedge endured a forgettable start to his international career and could not make a significant impact with the bat.

The batting failures, India's bowling unit provided a few encouraging signs. Harshit Rana and Shivam Dube bowled consistently throughout the series, while Prince Yadav also impressed with his performances and demonstrated his potential at the international level. However, the bowlers' efforts were overshadowed by the repeated failures of the batting lineup.

The series defeat has added to a growing list of disappointing results since Gautam Gambhir took charge as India's head coach. During his tenure, India has suffered an ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka, endured a home Test series whitewash against New Zealand, failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and missed qualification for the World Test Championship final. The loss to Ireland now adds another unwanted milestone, marking India's first-ever international series defeat to Ireland and their first T20I series whitewash against the European nation.

India's team selection has also come under increasing criticism. Questions continue to be raised over the role assigned to Washington Sundar, who has received regular opportunities across formats despite uncertainty surrounding his defined position within the team. The management's decision to strengthen the batting lineup at the expense of specialist wicket-taking bowlers has also become a major talking point following the series defeat.

Following their T20 World Cup triumph, the Indian team was widely regarded as one of the strongest sides in world cricket. However, the tour of Ireland has highlighted that adapting quickly to different playing conditions and maintaining consistency remain significant challenges. Unless India produces a strong response in the upcoming series, the pressure on head coach Gautam Gambhir and newly appointed T20 captain Shreyas Iyer is expected to increase considerably as questions continue to surround the team's direction and long-term strategy.
