
The Indian cricket board has announced the schedule for the upcoming ODI series against Afghanistan national cricket team, which will serve as an important preparation phase ahead of the next ODI World Cup. The first ODI match will be played on June 14 at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala. The second and third ODI matches are scheduled for June 17 in Lucknow and June 20 in Chennai respectively.
Before the ODI series begins, India will also play a Test match against Afghanistan under the leadership of young captain Shubman Gill. The Test encounter will be hosted at Mullanpur Cricket Stadium, which will be the first Test match for the Indian team at this venue. The match is considered crucial in the context of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship standings, where India is currently placed around sixth position. Victory in this match will be important for maintaining hopes of reaching the championship final.
Cricket analysts believe that the Afghanistan series will mark the beginning of India’s strategic preparation for the next ODI World Cup, which is expected to be held during October and November next year. After the Afghanistan series, the Indian team is scheduled to tour England in July where they will play three ODI matches. A home ODI series against Bangladesh was previously scheduled but uncertainty remains regarding its final confirmation.
India is also expected to host limited-overs series against West Indies in September and play further ODI matches against New Zealand in October-November. Another series against Sri Lanka is scheduled for December, giving the Indian squad a long preparation window before the global tournament.
