IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Goa, May 26: India defeated Maldives 11–0 in the opening match of the SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 held at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa on Monday. The dominant victory marked a strong beginning for the hosts as they aim to reclaim the title they last won in 2019.

The match, part of the opening fixture of the tournament, saw the Indian side completely overpower the opposition from start to finish. The Indian team displayed exceptional attacking strength, controlling possession and creating continuous scoring opportunities throughout the game. India women's national football team delivered a commanding performance in what was also their first-ever match at this venue in Goa. The team, often referred to as the Blue Tigresses, will be aiming to continue their winning momentum as they pursue the SAFF Women’s Championship title.

The tournament SAFF Women’s Championship 2026 features teams from the South Asian region, and India has been placed in a group alongside Bangladesh and Maldives. According to the format, the top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals, making every match crucial for progression.

Maldives women's national football team struggled to cope with India’s aggressive gameplay and disciplined structure, conceding multiple goals throughout the match. Despite their efforts, they were unable to break through India’s defence or mount any significant challenge during the game.
