IIE Digital Desk : Virat Kohli has announced his retirement from Test cricket, effective immediately. The decision comes just over a month before India's scheduled five-match Test series against England, set to commence on June 20, 2025.

Kohli, 36, made the announcement via a heartfelt Instagram post, expressing gratitude for his 14-year journey in the longest format of the game. He stated, "It's been 14 years since I received my Test cap. I've given my heart and soul to this format. It's not an easy decision, but I feel it's the right time to step away."

Throughout his illustrious Test career, Kohli played 123 matches, amassing 9,230 runs at an average of 46.85. His record includes 30 centuries and 31 half-centuries, making him India's fourth-highest run-scorer in Tests.

Kohli's leadership was instrumental in India's success in Test cricket. Appointed as Test captain in 2014, he led the team in 68 matches, securing 40 victories—the most by any Indian Test captain. Under his captaincy, India reached the ICC World Test Championship finals in both 2021 and 2023.

His retirement follows closely on the heels of Rohit Sharma's decision to step away from Test cricket, leaving a significant leadership void in the Indian Test setup. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had reportedly urged Kohli to reconsider his decision, especially with the upcoming England series. However, Kohli remained firm in his choice to retire.

While Kohli has stepped away from Test cricket, he continues to be active in other formats. He remains available for One Day Internationals (ODIs) and continues to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Notably, he had retired from T20 Internationals after India's World Cup win in 2024.

Kohli's retirement marks the end of an era for Indian Test cricket. His passion, dedication, and performances have left an indelible mark on the game, inspiring countless fans and aspiring cricketers. As India prepares for the England series, the team will look to new leaders to carry forward the legacy built during Kohli's tenure.
