IIE DIGITAL DESK : Samsung has reportedly started internal testing of its upcoming One UI 9 update, which is based on Android 17, for the Samsung Galaxy S26 lineup as the company prepares to bring its next major software upgrade to flagship smartphones. The first test builds of One UI 9 have been spotted on Samsung’s servers for devices such as the Galaxy S26 Ultra, indicating that development is actively underway well before a public beta release.
The Android 17‑based One UI 9 update is still in an early testing phase and has not yet been made available to the public. The internal build’s appearance suggests progress toward broader beta testing, which is widely expected to roll out to users in the coming months, possibly in late May or early June 2026. The stable rollout of One UI 9 could follow later in the year, potentially around September, once testing and refinements are complete.
The screenshots and test builds that have surfaced so far show that Samsung is laying the groundwork for a major interface upgrade over the existing One UI 8.5, which itself is based on Android 16 and started appearing on the S26 series earlier this year. While One UI 8.5 was focused on incremental improvements and security updates, One UI 9 is expected to introduce deeper system changes and possibly new features tied to Android 17’s enhancements, though detailed feature lists have yet to be confirmed by Samsung.
Industry sources speculate that Samsung may also unveil upcoming foldable devices, such as the next‑generation Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models, with One UI 9 preinstalled later in 2026. Such a strategy would align with Samsung’s pattern of using new software versions to support new hardware launches.
Owners of the Galaxy S26 series, this early testing phase means that Samsung is already preparing the software needed to keep its latest flagship devices up to date with Google’s Android innovations. As Android 17 itself focuses on stronger privacy, performance and system optimizations, One UI 9 is expected to build on these foundations with Samsung‑specific enhancements once made public.
