IIE Digital Desk: The BJP has intensified its preparations for the Rajya Sabha by-elections in West Bengal, with three of its candidates submitting their nomination papers for vacant Upper House seats. The elections, which are set to take place on July 24, have garnered significant political attention as a result of the transfer of several top officials from TMC to the BJP.

Former TMC Rajya Sabha members Sukhendu Sekhar Ray, Sushmita Dev, and Prakash Chik Barajik have been selected by the BJP to contest for the three seats. This is significant. They are nominated shortly after departing from the ruling Trinamool Congress, making bypolls a key test of changing political landscape in the state.

At the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in Kolkata, all candidates presented their nomination papers to the Returning Officer. The BJP's efforts to strengthen its hold on the Rajya Sabha and expand its influence in West Bengal were underscored by senior parliamentary and national leaders who accompanied them during the process. The vacancies emerged after Ray, Dev, and Baraik quit the party earlier this year, leaving behind their association with the Trinamool Congress. Their departures brought about a new political landscape and the implementation of by-election campaigns; these events have given the state several high-profile changes in recent months.

Election Commission schedule, on July 15, will review nomination papers and candidates can withdraw their nominations until July 17. July 24 is when the necessary votes will be held.... The BJP is considered a strong contender in the election, but the outcome will be determined by the level of competition that occurs before the polls. However, political observers are optimistic.

The by-elections are of great importance beyond those in West Bengal, as they could potentially strengthen the BJP-dominated National Democratic Alliance's position in the Rajya Sabha. Adding seats to the Upper House can help strengthen alliance’s legislative platform and enhance our parliamentary image.’ The nominations have garnered particular attention because all three are former members of Parliament who held prominent positions in Congress. They are now aligned with the BJP, reflecting on ongoing political developments in West Bengal and underlining efforts by the party to attract experienced parliamentarians.

The nomination process is now complete, and political attention will shift to the next stages of the election. The BJP candidates are likely to remain strong contenders in the Rajya Sabha seats, until rival parties make significant efforts. This is unlikely. The bypolls' conclusion is expected to impact not only parliamentary proceedings but also the political scenario in West Bengal.
