IIE DIGITAL: Reading is considered a good habit, but maintaining books in good condition is equally important. With growing book collections, proper care becomes necessary to ensure their longevity. Here are some essential ways to protect books from damage and keep them in prime condition.

1. Give Your Books a Protective Shield

Books, whether paperback or hardcover, need protection from external damage. A simple cover made of newspaper, plastic or chart paper can help protect books from stains and unnecessary creases. A paper wrap with tape can increase the lifespan of books, and the cover can be replaced whenever required.

2. Keep Moisture Away from Your Pages

Moisture remains one of the biggest threats to books. Books should be kept away from damp walls and areas prone to leakage. A bookshelf placed at least a foot above the floor can protect books from accidental water spills. If books get wet, they should be dried under a fan instead of direct sunlight, as sunlight can discolour pages and weaken the binding.

3. Guard Your Collection Against Tiny Invaders

Book lice, moths and silverfish can damage pages over time. Tiny holes in old books often indicate insect infestation. Keeping books in a dry and cool place can prevent such problems. In case of infestation, affected books should be isolated and treated separately.

4. Create a Safe Home for Your Books

Books should be arranged vertically on sturdy shelves with proper support from bookends to prevent leaning. Books of similar sizes should be placed together to maintain their shape. Large volumes such as atlases should be stored horizontally to keep their covers flat and prevent pages from separating from the binding.

5. Treat Every Book with Gentle Care

Careful handling helps maintain the durability of books. Readers should avoid folding page corners, also known as “dog-earing”, as it can leave permanent creases and damage fragile paper. Instead, thin paper strips or ribbons should be used as bookmarks. Thick or metal bookmarks should be avoided as they can tear and distort pages.
