IIE DIGITAL DESK : Howrah, March 19: The sensational robbery has sparked panic in the Dasnagar area of Howrah after miscreants allegedly broke into a locked house and decamped with cash and gold ornaments while the family was away on vacation.
The incident took place at the residence of Sandip Mondal, who had left for a trip to Puri with his family last Saturday. Taking advantage of the absence of the homeowners, the thieves reportedly entered the house and carried out the theft undetected.
The crime came to light on Thursday morning when Mondal’s nephew visited the house to feed the fish in an aquarium. Upon arrival, he noticed that the main gate was open, raising suspicion. As he entered the premises, he found that the locks of multiple rooms had been broken and the entire house was ransacked, indicating a well-planned burglary.
He immediately alerted neighbours, following which a crowd gathered at the spot, creating a buzz in the locality. The matter was soon reported to the local police station. Officials from Dasnagar Police Station reached the scene and initiated an investigation into the incident.
Speaking over the phone, Sandip Mondal stated that approximately ₹20,000 to ₹25,000 in cash and around two to three tolas of gold jewellery were kept in the house, all of which are suspected to have been stolen. He also confirmed that he is on his way back home with his family after learning about the incident.
Police have begun probing the case and are likely to examine local CCTV footage and question residents in the area to identify the culprits. The incident has once again raised concerns about security in residential neighbourhoods, especially when houses are left unattended for extended periods.
