IIE DIGITAL DESK : West Bengal’s Hooghly district after illegal firearms and explosives were recovered from bushes and nearby land close to the residence of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker in Goghat, triggering tension and panic in the area.

The incident took place on Thursday when local police, assisted by central forces, conducted a search operation in the West Parra Panchayat area under Goghat. During the operation, officers recovered multiple crude hand cannons from bushes located near the house of a prominent local TMC figure associated with the Goghat-2 Panchayat Samiti.

Police also dug up an area of land nearby and recovered a sack containing gunpowder, raising concerns about possible illegal arms storage in the locality. The recovery site is located within a short distance of the residence of a well-known TMC functionary, intensifying political attention on the incident.

Police and central paramilitary personnel secured the area and seized the materials for further investigation. The presence of explosives and firearms led to a large gathering of local residents, many of whom rushed to the spot after hearing about the recovery, adding to the tension in the region.

The incident has triggered sharp political reactions. Local opposition party workers have alleged that such arms stockpiling indicates a pattern of intimidation and potential violence during elections, accusing ruling party members of maintaining illegal weapon caches. They have also targeted local political figures, alleging a long-standing atmosphere of fear and criminal activity in the area.

The Trinamool Congress has been issued in response to the allegations so far. Authorities have begun an investigation to determine the origin of the recovered weapons and explosives, and whether any organized network is involved in storing or distributing illegal arms in the region.

The recovery has once again highlighted concerns over political violence and illegal arms circulation in parts of rural West Bengal, with security forces continuing their probe into the matter.
