IIE DIGITAL DESK : Malda, May 8 : Malda’s busy Rathbari area on Friday morning after a private passenger bus lost control and crashed into a road divider on a national highway stretch.

Three people including the driver sustained serious injuries in the accident. The injured have been identified as Tarjina Bibi, Basudev Karmakar, and Sikandar Ali. Tarjina Bibi is reported to be a resident of Malatipur, Basudev Karmakar from Old Malda, and Sikandar Ali from Salalpur in Chanchal.

Local reports suggest that the bus, which was heading towards Malda town, suddenly veered off course before reaching the Rathbari area. It then struck a lamp post mounted on the divider near a zebra crossing with significant force, causing severe damage to the vehicle.

The time of the accident, nearly 50 passengers were onboard the bus. The sudden crash led to panic among passengers, many of whom shouted for help as the vehicle came to a halt on the busy stretch.

Locals immediately rushed to the spot and assisted in rescuing the injured passengers. The injured individuals were taken to Malda Medical College and Hospital for treatment. While those with minor injuries were discharged after first aid, the three seriously injured persons remain under medical supervision.

Traffic police soon reached the location and removed the damaged bus from the road to restore normal traffic flow. Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident, including whether mechanical failure or driver error led to the loss of control.

The incident once again raises concerns over road safety on busy highway stretches passing through urban areas like Rathbari, where heavy traffic and pedestrian movement often increase the risk of accidents.
