IIE DIGITAL DESK ; Baranagar, August 1: The lives of two young schoolchildren and left their father critically injured on BT Road near Mallik Colony in Baranagar on Saturday morning, triggering shock and grief across the locality. The victims, aged five and seven, were students of Baranagar Dunlop Khalsa School. Their father, who was riding the scooter on which the children were travelling, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

The father was taking his two children to school on a scooter when the accident occurred near Mallik Colony. A truck reportedly hit the scooter from behind, causing all three riders to be thrown onto the road with great force. The impact was so severe that both children died at the spot, while their father suffered critical injuries.

The incident sparked widespread outrage and panic in the area as residents gathered at the accident site soon after the collision. A large contingent of police from Baranagar Police Station reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the incident and brought the situation under control.

Local residents alleged that the accident was caused by the movement of heavy trucks on BT Road beyond the permitted hours, coupled with reckless and overspeeding driving. Many residents claimed that despite traffic restrictions, heavy vehicles frequently use the road during prohibited hours, posing a serious threat to commuters and pedestrians.

Some residents also alleged that construction materials, including bricks and stones stacked along the roadside by property developers, had narrowed the carriageway and contributed to the dangerous traffic conditions. They argued that the presence of these obstructions has increased the risk of accidents in the area and called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and removal of unauthorized roadside materials.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the exact circumstances that led to the fatal collision. Investigators are expected to examine the truck involved, review available evidence, and record statements from witnesses to establish responsibility for the accident.

The heartbreaking deaths of the two young students have once again raised serious concerns over road safety, enforcement of traffic rules, and the movement of heavy vehicles on busy urban roads. Local residents have demanded stronger action to prevent similar tragedies, urging the authorities to ensure stricter monitoring of heavy vehicle movement and improve road safety measures in the area.
